Chapter 21

Rose

Amra wasn’t in the kitchen, but Caela was busy along with a team of people. I realized then that tonight wasn’t a normal night. There was a dance, and food would be served later than normal.

“Caela…” I said softly from the door.

She looked up at me and blinked. “What in the world happened?” she exclaimed. Dropping the knife she was using to cut vegetables, she ran around the table.

“I… I killed someone…” I said in a shaky voice.

“This isn’t your blood all over you?”

I shook my head. “He was being an asshole to Amra, and… and he used magic on me. I just lost control.” The tears began to flow again, and Caela rushed me to a basin full of water.

“Let’s get this blood off your hands, Lady,” she said as calmly as she could. I could feel the worry flowing through her. “You’ll need a real bath to get the rest off, but we can get some of it off at least. That’ll make you feel better.”

“What’s going to happen to me?” I asked.

“I don’t know, Lady,” she said softly. “Who did you kill?”

“A prince with light yellow wings. That’s all I know. He was just so mean. And then I felt everyone wanting to see me punish him. I don’t… I’m so sorry,” I said as I began to really cry.

She turned me around and pulled me to her. “It’s okay. Everything’s going to be fine, Lady,” she said in hushed tones as she embraced me.

I felt the emotions begin to pour out of me, but she didn’t let me go as the tears fell in a waterfall. “Let it all go, Miss,” she said as I finally broke down in her arms. All the stress. All the pressure. It all just came crashing down around me, and I wasn’t a Princess or a Queen. I was just a college girl who had done the most terrible thing she could have imagined.

And Caela just kept holding me. Like a mother. Like the rock that you know will never let you get swept out into the nothingness. She barely knew me, but there was no doubt in my mind that I could trust this woman.

Her hand ran over my back just like I was her child. Her warmth pulled away the coldness and atrocity of the night. And I felt better. In just those few minutes of being with her, I felt better. Those moments where I didn’t have to be strong or confident or even functional let me calm down.

I finally pulled away from her and wiped my eyes. I gave her a slight smile and said, “Thank you. I’m sorry for pulling you into this. I was just looking for Amra.”

She nodded and said, “Amra will be in the gardens. She knew not to come to the kitchens while there’s a dance going on, and that’s the one place she can find some peace from the little shits.”

“I know that you’re feeling a lot of emotions, Lady, but don’t let that girl get hurt.
